George Nelson, Swag-leg chair, Herman Miller

George Nelson adopted moulded fibreglass as a seat structure to create a highly evocative and sculptural armchair. Balanced upon an elegant tapered ‘swag’ leg, the complex form provides a high level of comfort utilising modern technology.

The two-part seat and fine leg structure created a higher price point and was aimed at a different market than that of the Eames’ fibreglass seating series. The chair did however use the sample rubber fixing mounts that Eames introduced to the groundbreaking fiberglass chairs. Nelson created a desk and table range to accompany the chair utilizing the same swag-tubular base.

George Nelson was a visionary designer and writer. He acted as creative director at Herman Miller and oversaw the keys works by Charles and Ray Eames, Noguchi and Alexander Girard. His own creations reflected his independent spirit, and forged new typographies. Icons such at the Coconut chair and Ball clock still being produced.
